As a part of our Building on Success project, the Physicians’ Institute coordinated two intensive workshops utilizing a Train-the-Trainer approach to promote the methods of Motivational Interviewing focusing on smoking cessation for representatives from several of the CS2day Community initiatives.   Motivational interviewing has been shown to improve treatment adherence and outcomes, promote health behavior change, and improve patient satisfaction with care.  A set of training materials for workshop participants was provided to assist in local training.  The faculty for the Train-the-Trainer sessions were two expert trainers and practitioners of Motivational Interviewing, Bruce Berger, PhD, and William Villaume, PhD.   The trainings were held in January 21-22, 2011 in Chicago or on February 18-19, 2011 in Atlanta.  Materials from these trainings can be downloaded below:

These patient scenario videos show the wrong way and right way to use a motivational interviewing approach to communicate with patients.  The wrong way to communicate is labeled as the directive approach and the right way to communicate is the motivational approach.

Introduction to Motivational Interviewing for Tobacco Cessation

This two-hour, six-chapter video featuring Drs. Bruce Berger and William Villaume provides a basic introduction to the concepts and skills of Motivational Interviewing, with an emphasis on its use for tobacco cessation. Motivational interviewing is a proven, patient centered counseling method for addressing patient ambivalence and resistance to change. Motivational interviewing has been shown to improve treatment adherence and outcomes, promote health behavior change, and improve patient satisfaction with care.
