INTENDED AUDIENCE: The target learners include physicians and other healthcare providers who assist patients to quit smoking.

DESCRIPTION: This case explores the core elements of brief motivational interventions in-depth, so that clinicians can learn how to apply these techniques with their patients who are not yet ready to quit smoking.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing the case, learners should be able to:

  1. Deliver brief interventions based on Motivational Interviewing to their patients who are not yet ready to quit smoking.
  2. Describe and apply basic techniques for starting the conversation with patients who are unwilling to quit smoking at the time of their clinic visit.
  3. Describe and apply the concepts of assessing importance and confidence with their patients who smoke.
  4. Describe and apply the concept of decisional balance with their patients who use smoke.
